After losing his re-election for sheriff, Alden Rockwell (Tom Wopat) settles into retirement. When friend and neighboring county sheriff Clint Thorne, (Jeff Fahey) is gunned down, Rockwell takes matters into his own hands. Drawing on years of experience and help from local diner owner Maddie Hall (Patricia Richardson), he uncovers a web of corruption that he is determined to expose, even if some lines must be crossed.
